What exactly is mask and how many of us can admit to wearing one at any point in your life? As a woman I can attest to the reality that no matter how I may be feeling on the inside, I almost feel expected to go out, perform and make “it” happen no matter what the circumstances. We are all putting our best foot forward but are we healed, whole, free from those insecurities that challenge us on the daily? Everyone talks about how great they’re doing, but are you whole? This is why we decided to put an honest conversation to the forefront.
We hand-selected a group of (8) respected, professional women to discuss their journey of success and the price that they have had to pay in order to achieve their success. “The UnMasked Effect” is a sincere and thought-provoking discussion proctored by leadership and empowerment advocate, Cordelia Abrokwah, where women discuss the implied “masks” that they have worn while hiding truths about their character, insecurities or personal hardships due to fear, lack of self-worth, guilt, shame or embarrassment. Throughout the conversation, our cast of women learn wisdom and motivation needed to remove any unnecessary masks and triumph over fears, doubts or insecurities that may have hindered them on their journey.
And then this happens…
The climax of the series is when each woman partakes in an innovative yet effective exercise where they remove their implied masks. What happens next is the confrontation and honesty with oneself that leads each woman to share her truth, remove her mask and give someone else the courage to the same. We like to call it “The UnMasked Effect.”

Picture this. Let me warn you now that it’s not a pleasant picture but it’s one that we will inevitably all face one day…
The time has come where you have passed on and it’s your funeral. It’s now the time where loved ones and those whose lives you’ve influences share some last words about you…think, what do you want them to say? This ladies (and maybe gentlemen) is your legacy. It is the impact of your contributions to this world; it’s how those contributions have influenced lives, it’s essentially who and what you’ll be remembered for and what you are passing down to future generations.
When I tell people that their lives are not their own, their lives are to influence, help and serve others according to their purpose, a light bulb goes off. If I told you that you have the choice to influence hundreds, thousands and millions of people’s lives when you make the conscious decision to live in purpose, would you not accept the call? Unfortunately, too many of us have allowed our fears, shames, doubt and insecurities to stop us from living our desired lives. However, when you do that there is a little girl or boy, or a future patient or neighbor who misses out on the opportunity to be positively influenced by you.
The truth is that each of us has a divine purpose to use our gift, talents and abilities to help serve a human need. When you begin to do that, you begin the journey of building and embracing your legacy intentionally. All great legacies are in accordance to that person using what they were good at to fulfill a need despite the odds along the way…think Steve Jobs or Martin Luther King Jr. You do not have to create a groundbreaking device or March on Washington to have a legacy. The teacher, nurse, designer, attorney, record executive also have their own legacies.
We each have the power to create the lives that we want, according to the legacy we want to leave. This is the very core of our mission which is why we created the Your Legacy section. This section is dedicated to all things to inspire, ignite, influence, impact your legacy in a transformative way.
Check it out and remember that the journey of 1000 miles begins with that 1 step!

I am FILLED with my “isms” because a few years ago life began to smack me upside of my head and I had no choice but to start listening. I began to pay attention to life with a new eye of insight. Honestly, before that I was just existing and doing what I thought I was supposed to do. I was allowing life to happen to me, I was not dictating life.
In response to that realization, I began this life-long spiritual and self-reflection journey. Reading the books, spending time alone, getting uncomfortable and pushing myself to new places. In that time, I have learned sooooooooooo much about life, character, fears, shame, pride, pain, joy, peace, relationships and too much more that I can’t recall right now. I have plenty of “teachers” who have helped me along the way and please understand that this woman who is writing this is a total contrast from the girl I used to be.
So after all the learning I’ve done, I now see myself teaching. Maya Angelou has this quote that goes, “When you learn, teach.” That is exactly why I do. I am a teacher with quite the wisdom to share because I have been there, I have fallen, I have had to pull myself back up and do the work. I am just like you.
Each week I send out motivating, inspirational and sometimes brutally honest emails that are created to provoke you to be your best you while keeping up with all things Embrace Her Legacy. Each email is carefully written and is usually a reflection of something I have experienced or am currently experiencing.
Of course I would love for you to join in and check out what I have to say, I promise that I won’t bite 😉

You are not alone…you wake up one morning and your credit cards are maxed out, or close to being maxed out and you wonder how it happened. More people find themselves juggling credit card debt and become overwhelmed because they are not sure how to manage it or pay it off. So, how should you begin to deal with paying off credit card debt?
First, you need to get REAL. Be honest with yourself about how you got to the point of drowning in debt. Was it the pair of shoes you had to have? Too many dinners out with friends? Whatever the reason, you will have to be determined to get the debt under control. Here are a few life preserver ideas to keep you from drowning.
- Pay off the card with the highest interest rates first. The higher a debt’s interest rate the more it costs you in interest per dollar of debt. You’re wasting money that you could be saving.
- Pay more than the minimum payment. The problem with only paying the minimum payments is that the payments go mostly toward the interest and don’t reduce your actual card balance. Banks hope that you will only make the minimum payments because the longer you take to pay off the debt the more interest they make.
- Re-negotiate the terms with your existing creditors. Ask them for a lower interest rate. This will be challenging if you have been late on payments in the past. If they are unwilling to lower the interest rate, ask them for a new lower repayment schedule.
- Move high interest balances to lower interest cards if there is room. If your cards are maxed out pay the minimum on all of your cards except the one with the lowest interest rate. Pay this card off faster and transfer the other cards debt to that card. Check promotional offers with lower interest rates to transfer balances to. Make sure to examine offers which are enticing and stick to your plan of paying off your debt.
- Use your savings. Not the best sounding option but the reality is that a savings account is not earning enough to make up for the 12%-35% interest rate you are paying on credit cards. Make sure to keep some funds in the account for emergencies.
- Do NOT borrow from your 401K account. The drawbacks outweigh the positives. The interest and penalties make this an unattractive way to pay off debt.
- If you own a home consider a home equity loan, but don’t make the mistake of paying off credit card debt and keeping the accounts open. Close all but one card and only use that card when you have the money to pay it off when the monthly statement arrives.
- Depending on how large the debt, consider borrowing the money from family and friends. Make sure to put in writing how you plan to repay the loan.
If you find that your options are limited and you are unable to utilize the above life preserver methods, then as a last resort file bankruptcy. This should be an absolute last resort. There are two types of bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Make sure to educate yourself before deciding which one is best for you.
Remember that you have to be determined to not only pay off credit card debt but also to stay out of credit card debt.
