Meet The Cast of “The UnMasked Effect”!

Meet The Cast of “The UnMasked Effect”!

Many of you may be wondering how the idea of “The UnMasked Effect” came about. Before I start to tell you, I want you to know that everything I do is usually motivated by something I have experienced, encountered and want to share in order to motivate, empower and inspire you.

I am a firm believer that in order to ignite change, you have to first become the change that you want to see. I had a moment last year when I knew I had to be willing to share my story (my whole story, not just the sweet moments) in order to really impact other women. Truth is that I was dealing with feelings of shame, guilt and inadequacy because I didn’t have the resources or lifestyle as other women who were successful in this world of empowering women. I felt ashamed saying that I was from and still do live in East New York, Brooklyn because that wouldn’t resonate as “success” with others. I kept thinking thought like, “What is this girl from Brooklyn know about helping others live on purpose…I’m still trying to make it myself!” Nevertheless, I would be a fraud if I would tell others to embrace their story, honor their truths and me not follow suit. No ma’am…I will always choose courage over comfort.

So I started allowing myself to become more vulnerable with my winning circle of influence, which includes a STELLAR group of powerful, professional women. And I noticed something…I was not alone. We were all carrying feelings of inadequacy to fulfill our life-long dreams or shame from our pasts or fears of failure and success! I knew I had to do something about it and make it OK for us to share our stories because essentially we inspire others to do the same. It’s about triumphing over all the “stuff”; what you hold in secret has power over you.

That’s when my girl Cordelia Abrokwah (leadership and youth empowerment coach) and I hooked up for our occasional “superpower” dinner. The dinner is essentially us women who get together  to eat, share, encourage, inspire, giggle, joke and say all things that we wouldn’t really post on Facebook if you get my drift. Cordelia begins to share this incredible exercise she proctored with a group of teenage girls, involving a mask and a mirror. (I will not give away details because we all partake in the exercise in the series which you’ll have to watch to see!) What I will share that it usually ends up with women in tears and declaring worthiness and hope for the future.

My immediate response was that we HAVE to do something like that with older, professional women. I went into brainstorming mode and out came “The UnMasked Effect.” Embrace Her Legacy executively produced a conversation of group of women to discuss their fears, price of success, vulnerabilities, beauty, confidence, self-worth, and survivor stories. Each lady came in, not really knowing what to expect but when I say we broke chains of inadequacy, cried, and laughed by the end of the day. I’m hoping you can relate to these real women, talking real issues. If you haven’t watch the trailer, please watch it here!! And make sure you watch the double-header premiere of the series on Wed. March 26th at 8pm EST via our YouTube Channel.

Our Founder Featured in ESSENCE Magazine!

Our Founder Featured in ESSENCE Magazine!

Being on this journey of pursuing purpose, I have my “dream” moments” but I’m so focused on doing the job that I forget to embrace those sweet victory moments. I’ve been humbled to know that I don’t do what I do for the “fame” or to cover up some lack of self-worth issues but the truth is I do it because I know MUST honor the call of my life, I am serving others with my gifts, talents and abilities and provoking others to do the same. So when I was notified that Glade and ESSENCE magazine wanted to feature me as a “Women of Note” in the March 2014 issue of ESSENCE (which is their Hollywood issue and one of the most coveted issues of the year), I kinda had a “Are you serious? Are you sure? OH MY GOD” moment! What’s been harder is keeping it a secret because you guys know I’m a talker 🙂 1-Essence How did this happen? I’m glad you asked! Someone took noticed of what I was doing, knew my story and the rest is history. And that’s the most magical part here. So many times we focus on going after the big opportunities (which is totally fine), however, I’m learning to remain focused on doing my best and allowing the opportunities to come my way. You never know who is watching you, so I want to encourage you to keep doing your best. Be a person that people remember and share your story because truth is you never know who is listening. glade feature.pdf-page-001

I practice what I preach. I preach the message of fearlessly pursuing your purpose by using your gifts to serve others, being fabulous and your best self while you do so and intentionally building a legacy that is so great that it speaks volumes for itself.  I am a firm believer that you have to first become the change you want to see and it looks like it’s working for me so I am hoping I can encourage you to do it too!

P.S. – I’m a Afro-Latina from the projects of East New York, Brooklyn who is pursuing her dreams on her unwavering faith, so can you 🙂

The Secrets To Living In Your Purpose

Let me ask…what are the initial steps one should take when pursing that dream that is bursting inside of us? Everyone talks about pursuing your dreams but how does it manifest into true success?
As the first month of the New Years comes to a close, I started to do some much needed reflection on my own journey of this matter…
I started thinking about recent events within the last month that have left me in awe. There are so many fantastic things on the horizon that I’m DYING to share with you but I’ve learned timing is key so details will have to wait.
I thought about all the wonderful people I know who support me and challenge my growth, I thought about the upcoming opportunities that have seen to fallen out the sky, I thought about the countless blessings I have in resources, relationships, connections and of course my emotional self began to cry.
For those of you who may not know, what makes the mission of Embrace Her Legacy to empower the legacy and overall lives of women and girls super special is that I am exactly what I preach. I quit a high-profile job in the music industry to live the life I wanted. It may not have always been easy but it has been worth it.
Then it hit me that I have been divinely chosen to serve you. For some reason, God thinks I am capable of being the midwife to your legacy.Again the tears…this time because I was humbled. So I thought some more. “What do I have the allows me to do this in a world where it seems abnormal to pursue purpose and the comfort of the safe route (even when it leaves you miserable) is accepted?”

Courage.
Truth is, courage is going to be one of the key factors to get you to pursue the life you want, not the one you will settle for. It takes courage to say, I want more and I’m worth more because if you choose courage, then you have to be willing to get uncomfortable.
So what is it that you want to pursue? What’s holding you back? It doesn’t always have to be a business, sometimes it can just be a new apartment!
Along with courage, there were a few other things that helped me to focus 100% on creating the life I want:
  • Willingness to be uncomfortable. You have to be willing to go through a season of discomfort in order to live your dreams. By discomfort, I mean doing things that will stretch you, going through the tough times and accepting that as part of the journey.
  • Financial discipline. (This one is for those of you who may want to start a business or switch career lanes) I didn’t just leave my job broke. I had a nice stack of money to hold me up for a while. How? I’m glad you asked. I would pay myself in a high-yield savings account every time I got paid. How much? At least 10%. I started doing this early in my career just as a way of being financially secure which paid off big time years down the line. Another point, live under your means. If you can afford living in a $1500 apartment, live in a $1100 apt so you can stash the rest of that money. Another option, SAVE your income tax refund check. Instead of buying $1000 shoes, I would save my refund checks or use them as an investment into my company.
  • Invest in yourself. I’ve read so many books on leadership, finances, business and personal development. I went to conferences, joined organizations and was willing to do the work to invest into my future. Another crucial aspect is that I did plenty of investing into my personal development in order to become the “who” in order to do the “what.” (seeking counsel, taking classes, going to church etc.)
  • Never be afraid to ask questions or talk to anyone. I’m a talker so this one is a little easier for me, but simply talking to people, networking and building relationships has lead to countless opportunities for me. I see so many people afraid to go out of their comfort zone to meet new people but you have to have the right network of people to support your dreams. Peer mentors, mentors, or someone who does what you want to do…pick their brain. If you want to learn, ask someone.
  • Effective time management. You have to have goals, objectives with a timeline in order to be effective. Carve out time to get things done and give yourself a schedule. Every Sunday I make my goals for the week and every day I have a schedule that corresponds with those goals. if you have spare time, then use that to pursue your goals instead of watching TV or checking Facebook.
  • Move in silence. DO NOT start shouting off the mountain top all your hopes and dreams. I didn’t tell anyone about Embrace Her Legacy and me quitting my job because frankly I didn’t want to hear everyone’s opinion and I knew I was ordained to do what I was called to do. Tell people when the time is right.
These are just a few vital pointers that I hope could help you. Feel free to share with your circles my forwarding this email to a friend (using the links on the side of the email), sharing on your social networks at the top of this email or sharing your thoughts on Facebook. Until then, continue to embrace your legacy 🙂

The Beauty, Style, Legacy Exchange in Honor of Day of The Girl

The Beauty, Style, Legacy Exchange in Honor of Day of The Girl

Last year the United Nations launched International Day of the Girl which raises awareness and advocates rights for education, freedom and liberties for girls all over the world.

This year’s International Day of the Girl was on Fri. Oct 11th and in honor of it, we partnered with non-profit organization, The Opportunity Network for a one-of-a-kind event titled The Beauty, Style & Legacy Exchange.  We created an uplifting, transformative, inspiring 3-part workshop for about (40) teenage girls. Our girls walked away empowered, and renewed. We hosted workshops on the essence of beauty, conquering life’s giants and unique style empowerment techniques. We laughed, learned and loved. Our girls need to know that they matter and that’s exactly what we did.

Thank you to our supporters Jamba Juice, Carol’s Daughter, Vera Moore Cosmetics, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, IMAN Cosmetics and The Opportunity Network for truly making this a MAGNIFICENT event!
